Bordeaux is barely 20 minutes away by car or you can travel by boat to the Port of the Moon, to explore the marvels of the city, classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
The city is a treasure-trove of historic heritage and architecture: explore one of the largest concentrations of unspoiled 18th and 19th-century architecture in France in the picturesque streets and squares between the Saint Pierre and Sainte Croix districts.
The large numbers of former religious buildings around Saint Michel, with its towering Gothic spire, and Sainte Eulalie church are reminders of the city's prosperity in the Middle Ages.
The magnificent carved-stone facades, stretching over a kilometre along the Garonne waterfront, offer a wonderful setting for a stroll.
Bordeaux is also known for its fine cuisine, with restaurants and delicatessens to delight the most demanding gourmets.
Located 45 minutes from Sources de Caudalie, the village of Saint Emilion features outstanding architecture (a hermitage, a monolithic church, a collegiate church, and an archbishop's palace, as well as lovely old stone houses and vestiges of medieval fortifications) on narrow cobblestone streets and shaded squares. This town is also famous around the world for its fine wines and regional specialities (macaroons, pâtés, foie gras, etc.).
The medieval village has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
Although the architecture is quite outstanding, wine lovers are even more attracted by the famous local red wine. Amazingly diverse terroirs account for enormous variety. The appellation is comprised of Saint-Emilion and 7 neighbouring communes with a total of nearly 5,200 hectares of vines.
Three grape varieties predominate: Merlot (60-70%), Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of the three produces wines that are are among the finest in the world.
Please ask at reception, and Sources de Caudalie will be glad to suggest which cellars to visit and to open the doors to the most famous châteaux.
